She said, “I feel no meaning and value to wear such a precious ornament when my fellow women were stripped-off and sexually assaulted”

When the world hung its head in shame over the 26-second horrific video that emanated from strife-torn Manipur on July 19, a woman from Manipur like everyone else too felt extremely hurt, shocked and horrified, disgusted, angry and was spending sleepless nights.

But Hatnu Kipgen, a mother of three sons and a daughter, did not just sit tight feeling sorry for the two women who were stripped, groped, paraded nude and one of them gang raped.

Hatnu donated her Gold Ring to the women to help them with their lives and also get medical aid and pay their medical bills.

The Gold Ring was special for Hatnu as it was gifted to her by her husband on her 35th birthday.

“I could not sleep the whole night (after seeing the video). My fellow women were stripped-off their clothes and sexually assaulted in the worst and brutal form. I felt no meaning and value to wear such a precious ornament in my hands though it is a very special one. It was at that moment I came up with an idea to do something for them and decided to donate my Gold Ring to encourage the womenfolk for crowdfunding for the cause of our women as they would need medical check-up,” Hatnu told Northeast Live.

“The gold ring was special for me as it was gifted to me by my husband on my 35th birthday,” Hatnu said pleased with the fact that she could do something for the women but still trying to come to terms with what has happened.

It was during the massive rally and sit-in-protest organized by the Kuki Women Organization for Human Rights, or KWOHR, at Kangpokpi recently that Hatnu Kipgen donated her special gold ring in front of the crowd, encouraging them to come forward in support of the victims. The initiative earned a huge response and generated around Rs two lakhs within an hour for the two women victims.

It is people like Hatnu and gestures like hers that keeps humanity and mankind alive in the face of adversity, crime and heartbreaks.
