Sikkim: HSP alleges corruption in education department, seeks investigation under PMLA

The letter contains compelling evidence that the government has been granting university licenses to newly formed entities

The Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), led by President Bhaichung Bhutia and General Secretary Biraj Adhikari, has submitted a letter to the Enforcement Directorate demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities within the state’s education department.
In a significant move, the party invoked the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), raising concerns about the Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang Golay, and Education Minister, Kunga Nima Lepcha, utilizing their positions to amass wealth for themselves and their associates.
The letter contains compelling evidence that the government has been granting university licenses to newly formed entities, operating under a troubling pattern of quid pro quo.
According to the HSP’s claims, these entities have been incorporated just a few months before obtaining the licenses, indicating a suspicious lack of adherence to proper procedures.
Of particular concern is the absence of public “request for proposal (RFP)” notices in the process of awarding university licenses.
This omission suggests a lack of competitive bidding, raising questions about the transparency and fairness of the licensing process. The party alleges that the government has been unilaterally choosing recipients for these licenses, leading to undue benefits for favoured entities.
President Bhaichung Bhutia and General Secretary Biraj Adhikari stated in the letter, “Despite our limited resources, we have diligently gathered evidence to substantiate these claims. We believe that these actions are a clear case of corruption. The government is using its power to enrich itself and its associates, and this is harming the people of Sikkim. I urge you to investigate these allegations and bring the perpetrators to justice. We earnestly request a fair and impartial investigation into this matter, keeping the best interests of the people of Sikkim and their future at the forefront.”
