DGP Mizoram emphasized the significance of maintaining law and order during the protest

Ahead of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) led NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC)’s proposed solidarity protest march on July 25 to express support for the Kuki-Zo community in Manipur, Director General of Police (DGP) Mizoram, Pu Anil Shukla reviewed the security arrangements.

He held a review meeting with all the top officials of the state to take stock of the security arrangements and deployments to ensure a peaceful and orderly demonstration.

The proposed protest march comes in the wake of the disturbing incident that took place on May 4, involving the Kuki women who were paraded naked and sexually assaulted by mobs in Manipur, which has drawn nationwide attention and condemnation.

During the review meeting, DGP Mizoram emphasized the significance of maintaining law and order during the protest. The safety and security of Manipuri people including Meiteis residing in various parts of Mizoram were also thoroughly reviewed to prevent any untoward incidents.

In light of the upcoming demonstration, DGP Mizoram directed the proper deployment of police personnel, patrolling, and vigilance in all districts, particularly in vulnerable areas. He stressed the need for an adequate number of reserve forces equipped with vehicles and officers to facilitate swift deployment and response in case of any untoward situation within their respective jurisdictions.

Following the meeting, DGP Mizoram, accompanied by a team of senior police officials, conducted an on-ground review of the proposed protest site locations in Aizawl. The locations assessed were Chanmari on the north side, Kulikawn on the south side, and Raj Bhavan North Gate, where the procession is scheduled to take place. This on-site assessment aims to ensure that the necessary security measures are in place for the smooth conduct of the protest and to address any potential challenges that may arise.

The Mizoram Police, in collaboration with administrative officials, are keeping a close watch on the situation. Senior police officers, along with all personnel on the ground, are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of Manipuri people and Meitei communities residing in various parts of Mizoram.
