Meghalaya Government hikes diesel prices by 50p/Litre

The taxes on diesel has been raised to generate additional revenue for the state, CM Conrad Sangma said

In a bid to bolster state revenue and address the price disparity to a certain extent between diesel rates in Meghalaya and neighbouring Assam, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday increased the price of diesel by 50 paise a litre. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, comes as the state government seeks to bridge the gap and augment its financial resources.

Speaking about the rationale behind the move, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized the need to address the significant difference in diesel prices prevailing between Meghalaya and Assam.

Presently, diesel in Guwahati is priced at Rs 90.33 paise, while in Khanapara (part falling under Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya), the rate stands at Rs 84.10 paise, resulting in a notable disparity of Rs 6.23 paise per litre. The increased tax is aimed at reducing this discrepancy and generating additional revenue for the state.

“We have decided to hike the diesel tax by 50 paise considering the overall revenue for the state. This measure is necessary to close the gap in diesel prices between Meghalaya and Assam,” stated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

With the enhancement of the diesel tax, the state government anticipates generating approximately Rs 5 to 6 crore in additional revenue. The move is seen as a step towards creating a more balanced pricing structure for fuel in the region and improving the state’s financial standing.

However, the Chief Minister acknowledged that the decision may have implications for the prices of essential commodities.
