Manipur Govt announces Rs 10 lakhs compensation to next kin of the Naga woman killed in Imphal

The government would also pay for her last rites, daughter’s education and give her a job when she becomes eligible

In a major decision, the N Biren Singh-led Manipur Government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of Lucy Marem, the Maring Naga woman who was brutally killed in Imphal on Saturday last.

The government also said that it will pay an amount of Rs. 5 lakhs for the rituals to be performed as the last rites of Lucy according to Maring customary law, an additional Rs. 5 lakhs will be given to meet the educational expenses of Marim Shangpui, the daughter of Lucy Marem, who was shot dead by miscreants in Imphal.

Besides this, the State Government has also promised to provide employment to Marim Shangpui as and when she becomes eligible.

The announcement was made following a meeting between Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and representatives of the United Naga Council and the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, or COCOMI, in Imphal.

Cabinet Minister Khashim Vashum, Chairman, Hills Area Committee, Dinganglung Gangmei, and Chandel MLA SS Olish also attended the meet.

The COCOMI, for its part, also apologised to the UNC delegation and expressed regret over the killing of Lucy Marem.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh also condemned the inhuman act and shared his grief and sympathy with the family members of the late Lucy Marem and representatives of the UNC. He assured that justice would be done in the case.

During the meeting, it was agreed to ensure that the culprits be taken into custody and given befitting punishment in accordance with the law.

Furthermore, it was also agreed that the COCOMI shall initiate efforts to ensure that no such untoward incident is meted out to any community in the future.

The UNC, for its part, agreed to suspend all forms of agitation and extend cooperation to the police to facilitate the early completion of the investigation into the killing.
