Now, Tawang farmers to cultivate exotic walnut

Deputy Commissioner and Horticulture department encouraged farmers to embrace scientific methods and form self-help groups
In some good news for the northeastern region, farmers of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh would soon be cultivating the exotic dry fruit, walnut.
In an effort to promote horticulture and boost agricultural practices, a one-day farmers training and workshop on the cultivation of exotic walnuts was successfully organized at Zomkhang Hall in Tawang. The event, sponsored by the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), saw the active participation of farmers eager to learn about walnut cultivation techniques.
During the event, Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang addressed the farmers, stressing the importance of growing horticulture products and adopting scientific methods to enhance the quality and quantity of fruits. He also highlighted the potential role of educated youths in marketing these products and encouraged the formation of self-help groups to engage more people in the agricultural sector. Emphasizing the “one district, one product” mission, the Deputy Commissioner expressed optimism about Tawang’s prospects for excelling in walnut production. He emphasized the significance of timely pruning for better yields in fruits like kiwi, apple, and orange.
Safior Rahman, the District Horticulture Officer of Tawang, informed the farmers about the state government’s adoption of walnut cultivation in Tawang district as part of the “one district, one product” mission. Over fifty thousand exotic walnut saplings of various varieties have already been distributed to farmers. Rahman explained that although the imported walnut saplings from Turkey have already started yielding fruits, the removal of fruits borne in the first two years is essential for better yield and plant longevity. He mentioned that an expert walnut farmer from Turkey was expected to attend the workshop but was unable to do so due to technical difficulties.
The technical session of the workshop featured specialists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tawang, as well as resource persons from the Agriculture and Veterinary departments. They interacted with the farmers and addressed their queries, providing valuable insights and knowledge on walnut cultivation techniques.
