Assam: Over 1182 rebels of 5 tribal rebel groups lay down arms

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again urged the ULFA-I to come to the negotiating table, give up arms and join the main stream
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Push for Peace got a massive thrust after 1,182 cadres of at least 5 different tribal rebel groups laid down arms in Guwahati today.
A mega arms laying down ceremony was held where the rebels handed over their arms to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma signifying their return to the mainstream by abjuring violence.
The rebels represent the following groups-
All Adivasi National Liberation Army (2 FACTIONS)
Adivasi Cobra Military of Assam (2 FACTIONS)
Birsa Commando Force (2 FACTIONS)
Adivasi People’s Army
Santhal Tiger Force
Since 2016, these organisations have been in a ceasefire and had signed peace settlements in September last year. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Speaking on the occasion, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “No one must think of taking up arms again after returning to the mainstream. If things do not work out there is a scope for talks in a democratic way with the government, we can prepare a way forward through talks. But we do not have the right to involve in bloodshed of the innocent.”
CM Sarma also appealed those have embraced peace to work for the greater benefit of the Adivasi society. Highlighting the government’s development pitch, Chief Minister Sarma informed that his government is contemplating for 3% reservation for candidates of the Adivasi, tea tribe community in terms of vacancies in government jobs.
The Assam Chief Minister hoped that a time will come when there will be no insurgency and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would be lifted from the entire state.
The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also once again urged the ULFA-Independent to sit across the negotiating table and join the mainstream.
