Himanta Biswa Sarma said that deliberations are on with various stakeholders to ensure that peace returns at the earliest

Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that there has been a considerable improvement of the prevailing situation in Manipur. Expressing firm belief, he said that the situation is expected to further improve in the next one week-10 days.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also appreciated the role played by the Centre as well as the Manipur government in restoring peace. He said, “I can tell you with guarantee that there is a mass improvement of Manipur situation than what was the situation one month back. Silently the Manipur government and the union home ministry is working. Now you can see what was the violence one month back and what is the level of violence today. Situation is fast becoming normal.”

Chief Minister Sarma who had once visited Manipur since trouble erupted on May 3, was also asked if he would again to the state particularly in the hill districts.

To this the Assam Chief Minister said, “We are in constant touch with the stakeholders. Yesterday also there was a meeting in Assam, there was a meeting in Delhi, there was a meeting in Imphal 2 days back, so whole lot of discussions are going on with the stakeholders.”

Himanta Biswa Sarma also replied to a query on whether he would negotiate a consultative meeting particularly among the Meiteis and the Kukis. Responding to this Sarma said, “You should not talk to me as an individual but the system is talking to both the groups and I am sure that there will be a time when reconciliation will also be possible.”

On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma trained his guns on the Congress over the party’s status on the prevailing situation in the state. He said, “Now the Congress is crying about Manipur when relative peace has come. They should have cried when there was a volatile situation. At one point of time they did not go to Manipur or neither they commented on Manipur. Now Manipur is almost limping back to normalcy and they are now talking about Manipur.”

Tasked by Union home minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had visited the trouble torn state on June 10. He met Manipur CM N Biren Singh, Manipur cabinet ministers, MLAs, BJP leaders as well as representatives of the civil society organisations.
