Are state leaders inefficient? Ask Manipur’s transgenders amid unabated violence in the state

Secretary of AMANA, Santa Khurai demanded accountability from both the center and the state to end the present crisis at the earliest

Now the transgender community of Manipur has called out the leaders of the state, terming them ‘not efficient enough’ to resolve the crisis in Manipur.

As the crisis deepens in Manipur with never-ending violence taking a toll on day-to-day life and activities, the transgender community staged a sit-in at Keishampat in Imphal on Saturday, demanding the government resolve the crisis at the earliest.

Speaking to the media, Secretary of the All Manipur Nupi Maanbi Association (AMANA), Santa Khurai, accused the government both at the Centre and in the state of deliberately trying to continue the conflict to serve their vested political interests.

She said that there is a larger picture behind the violence, which has gone beyond that of two communities.
Santa demanded accountability from both the Centre and the state to end the present crisis at the earliest.
“The state is always dependent on the Centre to deal with any situation taking place in the state which is very unfortunate for us. It really shows that the leaders are not efficient enough to protect the people of Manipur. Every conflict and crisis happens in Manipur they will request the Centre to send central army,” the AMANA secretary said.

“The government is responsible to deal with the situation and we demand the accountability of the state and the Central government because they have failed to commit to their accountability. Instead they are deliberately trying to continue with this conflict for their political interest,” the AMANA secretary added.
Santa further contended that the government continues suppressing information in this digital era by banning internet services for a month.

Santa also questioned the Indian government for not having a refugee law as northeastern states are vulnerable in terms of geographical location.

“Why the Indian government doesn’t have a refugee law? Manipur is a very sensitive area. Not only Manipur but the neighbouring states like Arunachal Pradesh bordering China, Mizoram bordering Burma, and Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh. All these states are very vulnerable in terms of geographical location. At any point of time we can get attacked from the external illegal migrants. The Indian government should have a refugee law properly put in place so that accordingly they will have a policy and program to take care of that situation.”
