The overall performance of the state, especially in the Garo Hills region was not up to the standard that was expected, said Education Minister
Conrad-Sangma-led Meghalaya government has expressed concern about the poor results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) this year and decided to review the poor performance of students in both examinations, informed Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma.
Minister Sangma said that the overall performance of the state and especially the Garo Hills region was not up to the standard that was expected.
“The state government and the education department are concerned about it. So, we will be sitting in Garo Hills first to review the overall performance as we have the committee, then we will constitute some more committees consisting of teachers and experts to see the bottom line and issues,” he added.
Talking about the drop out numbers, he said that the factors or the reasons have to be addressed.
To address the rising dropout rate in the state, the Education Department will examine the infrastructure, the quality of teaching in the classrooms, and other issues.
“We will sit and review the functioning of the department especially for the Garo Hills region as most dropouts and issues related to education are in Garo Hills region” he added.
Recently declared SSLC results saw a decline of 5% from the previous year’s results. The pass percentage for this year was 51.93%, which is a 5% decrease from the 56.96% of last year. This is mainly due to Garo Hills students’ poor performance which averaged 26-28%.
Meanwhile, this year the overall pass percentage for the HSSLC Arts stream was 80.30%. The overall pass percentages were 78.84% for science, 79.31% for commerce, and 93.75% for vocational.
