Army Chief Manoj Pande arrive in Imphal on 2-day visit to strife-torn Manipur

Gen Pande would meet Manipur Governor, CM and Security Advisor and also interact with the local formation commanders for a first hand account of the situation

Army Chief General Manoj Pande arrived in Imphal today to take stock of the security situation in strife-torn Manipur that has been witnessing incidents of violence since May 3. General Pande drove straight to the Raj Bhavan on his arrival.

The Army Chief will be briefed by the Eastern Command officials on the measures taken by the Indian Army to bring the situation under control. He will meet Governor Anusuiya Uike, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh.

“The meetings would discuss and deliberate over the current situation and future trajectory, in order to restore normalcy at the earliest. Gen Pandey will visit various locations where he will interact with the local formation commanders and obtain a first hand account of the situation obtaining on ground. He will also interact with the troops”, an official release said.

The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have intensified domination across Manipur. Security forces are also constantly monitoring the security situation. At least 38 vulnerable areas have been identified in the state and Central Armed Police Forces personnel have been deployed in those areas. So far 34,000 paramilitary forces have been deployed in the state to maintain peace, CM Singh had said addressing the media yesterday.

The Army Chief’s visit to Manipur is happening at a time when Union Minister of State for Home Nityananda Rai is already camping in the state and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to spend three days in the state from May 29-Jun1.
