CM Manik Saha tried to downplay the whole controversy and termed the entire issue as a ‘misunderstanding’
The controversy over Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s alleged directive to party (BJP) leaders not to address TIPRA Motha chief and Royal Scion Pradyot Debbarma as Maharaj or Bubagra has triggered a massive outrage among the people of the state, particularly tribal groups who showed their anger by burning the effigy of the Chief Minister and raising anti-Manik Saha slogans.
The protestors who took to the streets last night, demanded a public apology from the CM and he should withdraw his remark about the royal scion.
It may be mentioned here that CM Manik Saha at the BJP executive meeting in Sepahijala district three days ago had allegedly said that people need not address Pradyot Manikya as Maharaja as there is no place for king or maharaja in a democracy.
Reacting to the remark, Debbarma said yesterday, “I do not need a certificate, I live in the hearts of my people and whether they call me Bubagra, Pradyot or Maharaja it makes no difference to me. I have never asked anyone to call me Maharaja, I have never forced anyone to call me Bubagra. If people like me and call me like that then well and fine.”
Meanwhile, CM Manik Saha has tried to downplay the whole controversy and termed the entire issue as a ‘misunderstanding’.
Amid the row, CM Saha landed up at Debbarma’s palace yesterday to enquire about his health and wished him a speedy recovery.
