At least 188 people, mostly women and children, from strife-torn Manipur have fled to Mizoram, sources said on Saturday.
Two Mizoram districts, Aizawl and Saitual share a 95-kilometer-long border with Manipur.
Sources from Saitual District said that 16 people had entered the district since Friday seeking refuge in the state.
The displaced people are lodged at a makeshift camp at North-East Khawdungsei village on the Mizoram-Manipur border, the source informed.
The official said that the district administration is providing food and other relief to the displaced people.
He added that an influx of more people from the neighboring state is likely to take place.
A senior official in Mizoram’s Kolasib district said that at least 151 people from Manipur fled to Vairengte and Saipum villages on Friday.
Meanwhile, the state General Administration Department has instructed all deputy commissioners to be on high alert for a possible influx of people from the neighboring state.
A notification issued by the department also asked the district administration to make appropriate arrangements to provide safety and security, including temporary shelter and other amenities, to people seeking refuge in the state.
The department further instructed the deputy commissioners to ensure the safety of the Meitei community and take stringent measures to prevent any possible flare-up of ethnic tension within their respective jurisdictions.
