Mizoram has achieved a milestone in the development sector by becoming the first state in Northeast India to distribute property cards under the ‘survey of villages Abadi and mapping with improvised technology in village areas (SVAMITVA).

On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, PM Modi on Monday handed over 35 lakh SVAMITVA property cards to beneficiaries. With the handover of these cards, about 1.25 crore property cards will be distributed under the Swamitva Yojana in the country.

Likewise in Mizoram, state land revenue minister, Lalruatkima, today distributed the SVAMITVA property cards at Phulpui and Tachhip villages, becoming the first in the Northeast to do so.

The minister said that the distribution of property cards is a great development. Property cards are no different from LSC, he said, adding that land ownership is given to the people according to the law and that value calculations will be included.

The Minister also said that a Sub-Registrars’ Office (SRO) will be set up in each district soon as part of the National Generic Document Registration System.

The scheme is currently scheduled to be implemented in 319 villages in Mizoram. Phulpui and Tachhip are the first states in the North East to distribute property cards. 420 property cards, 166 cards in Phulpui, and 254 cards in Tachhip were distributed today.

SVAMITVA scheme is a property survey program launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24, 2020. It is a central-sector scheme of the ministry of Panchayati Raj to promote socio-economic empowerment and a more self-reliant rural India.

Under the scheme over 6.62 lakh villages across the country will be surveyed from 2021 to 2025, using varied technology, including drones, to measure and map residential village property.

The initial phase of the scheme was implemented during 2020–21 in select villages in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

The scheme intends to reduce property disputes by providing accurate land records while boosting financial liquidity.

The scheme aims to streamline planning and revenue collection, as well as ensure residents are informed of property rights in rural areas.
