The Seiñ Raij Jowai’s Arts and Culture committee hosted the annual Chad Sukra festival on April 23, which marks the beginning of the sowing season. The festival is celebrated to pray for a bountiful harvest and to seek the blessings of mother earth.

The event began with a short programme at Mynkoi Pyrdi, Iongpiah Jowai, with local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla serving as the chief guest. The Minister of Civil Defence and home guard, Coming One Ymbon, was the chief guest at the main event.

As per tradition, no one is allowed to plough their fields unless the festival is celebrated. The festival is a way to seek protection from any natural calamities that could harm the crops and to ensure a good harvest.

During the festival, the farmers offer prayers to mother earth and thank her for her blessings. They also seek her protection from any disasters that could ruin their crops.
