Meghalaya govt warns of stern action against universities issuing fake certificates

Coming down heavily on universities of Meghalaya issuing fake education certificates, Meghalaya Education Minister, Rakam A. Sangma said on Thursday that strict action would be taken against all those universities found guilty.
“Education is not something with which we should do business. This should be the sector to serve the people,” Rakam A. Sangma said.
Expressing concern about the bustling and thriving fake education certificate business, the Meghalaya Education Minister said that this is very unfortunate that names of some universities established on Meghalaya soil have been found to be involved in illegal activities. The minister said that the government will crack down on each university found involved in any such racket or any illegal activities.
Earlier, in November 2022, Telengana Police busted a fake certificate issuing racket was being allegedly rung by Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya. The accused were charging amounts up to Rs 3 lakh from each client to supply undergraduate degree certificates.
The Mahatma Gandhi University is based at Khanapara in Ri-Bhoi district. It also claimed to have a campus in Tura.
The arrested persons were identified as Dinesh Singh, Akhilesh Semwal, Tajinder Singh, Garikapati Venkata Bhaskar Satyanarayana Sharma, Geekuru Prem Kumar, and Singarapu Sujatha.
Similarly, in 2015, a fake certificate racket involving the CMJ University in Meghalaya was busted by the police.
A charge sheet was filed against 11 officials of the CMJ University for their alleged involvement in fraud, forgery and selling fake degree certificates to students.
In 2021 the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached assets worth Rs 13.54 crore to CMJ University, Shillong, its Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha, and his family members under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the fake degree certificate case.
