The Sikkimese definition row hit the BJP hard in Sikkim today. The saffron party faced a huge setback after Sikkim BJP Vice President Sher Bahadur Karki and Secretary Laten Sherpa resigned from the party this morning.
Speaking to Northeast Live after submitting his resignation, Sher Bahadur Karki said, “I feel BJP had a role to play in the amended Finance Bill passed by the Lok Sabha recently (that distorted the definition of Sikkimese and has put the entire community under threat). When Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Sikkim no discussion was held.”
When asked if he resigned because of differences with certain BJP leaders and party co-workers, Karki said that he has been with the party for a very long time but now BJP in Sikkim is no longer the organisation that it was and its functioning has taken a huge beating.
Karki further said that though he is yet to decide on his next political move and which party he would join, he would join a regional party would genuinely work the betterment of the state.
Vice President Sher Bahadur Karki submitted his resignation to BJP National President JP Nadda. In his resignation letter, Karki expressed gratitude to the party’s high command and co-workers of Sikkim BJP for their “guidance, advice, and cooperation” during his tenure as the party vice president.
Sherpa too, in his resignation letter, expressed his gratitude to the party leaders and co-workers for the help and opportunities given to him during his stay in the party. Sherpa was with the party for 16 years and had even contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket.
The BJP leadership is yet to comment on the resignations.
The resignations have come on a day when the Sikkim Assembly is having a special session to discuss the Sikkimese definition as mentioned in the Finance Act, 2023.
