Amid the ongoing demand for NRC implementation in Manipur and setting up a population commission, Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday informed that the government will soon launch a door-to-door survey to flush out illegal immigrants from the state.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also informed that the state government has already constituted a Manipur state population commission and has appointed the members.
“For Manipur, the government has constituted the population commission. This commission will identify who’s who from those settling in the state,” he added.
As per sources, the state’s home department is the administrative department of the Manipur State Population Commission.
Responding to queries on the government’s inability to implement NRC in the state, the Chief Minister said that the state has to take approval from the centre.
“NRC is doing this under the directive of Supreme court in Assam. But if we want to do NRC, we state alone cannot do it. We need approval from the central government,” N Biren Singh added.
The Chief Minister, however, did not divulge whether the state is sending a proposal to the centre for NRC implementation.
Replying to a query on Myanmarese immigrant settled in the state, the Chief Minister informed that the issue will be dealt separately.
“Manipur has implemented inner line permit based on the year 1961. Accordingly, we have formed a committee. The Myanmarese issue is separate. It will be dealt separately,” CM N Biren Singh said.
Earlier, Minister Thounaojam Basantakumar, speaking to Northeast Live informed that the government is discussing to send proposal for NRC implementation in the state.
