Row over Assamese-Bangla Gamusa: AASU Chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya seeks government action

Samujjal Bhattacharya said that Gamusa got the GI tag which means that no other state or region can claim Gamusa as their own
At a time when the state is gearing up to create a Guinness World Record this year with a total of 11,000 bihu dancers and dhuliyas performing in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Assamese Gamusa has landed in a controversy.
This time because the state representative conference of the Bangla Sahitya Sabha allegedly paired the Assamese Gamusa (said to be the pride of the Assamese people and the state) with the Bangla version of it and used it to honour its guests.
Chief Advisor of All Assam Students Union (AASU), Samujjal Bhattacharya on Tuesday called on the Assam government to take stern action against those who had come up with this brilliant idea of mixing the two and hurting and insulting Assamese sentiments.
Samujjal Bhattacharya said that Gamusa got the GI tag which means that no other state or region can claim gamusa as its own.
“Gamusa is our pride and now it has got a GI tag, so the pride of Assam needs to be saved at any cost. We urge that no other state or region should misuse our pride-Gamusa. Gamusa is Gamusa and Aronai is Aronai and it cannot be interchanged,” said Samujjal Bhattacharya
How did the gamusa controversy start?
On March 26, the Bangla Sahitya Sabha on its first state-level conference used Assamese-Bangla paired gamusa (half part was the Assamese Gamusa design and half the Bangla design) to honour their guests including Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
Soon photos of Assam Minister Ranoj Pegu with the Assamese-Bangla paired gamusa around his neck, and that of another Assam Minister, Bimal Borah smiling looking at the Assamese-Bangla gamusa in his hands went viral on social media.
