Jimmy defeated 6-time MLA and political veteran Mukul Sangma by a margin of 5313 votes

It was a big win for NPP when its candidate, Jimmy D Sangma defeated 6-time MLA and political heavyweight of Meghalaya, TMC leader, Mukul Sangma by a margin of 5,313 votes in the Tikrikilla seat.

It was a massive upset for former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who ruled for eight years (2010-18) and is now known to be the flag bearer of the TMC in Meghalaya.

While Jimmy D Sangma received a total of 13,218 votes, Mukul Sangma could garner only 7,905 votes.
Rahinath Barchung of the BJP polled 7,849 votes. It may be mentioned that Jimmy D Sangma is the sitting MLA of Tikrikilla.

Mukul Sangma who was contesting from two seats – Tikrikilla and Songsak, won the Songsak seat.
It was definitely a mixed day for Mukul Sangma.

While he won one and lost one, his wife Dikannchi D Shira of TMC lost the Mahendraganj seat that she had won in 2013 and 2018. She was the sitting MLA of Mahendraganj. She lost by 1,718 votes to Sanjay A Sangma of NPP.

There was more bad news in store for Mukul Sangma. His brother Zenith Sangma of TMC lost the Rangsakona seat by 788 votes. Zenith had won the seat thrice on Congress ticket in 2003, 2013 and 2018.
There was some good news though for the veteran politician of the state. His daughter, Miani D Shira of TMC won the Ampati seat that Sangma had won in 2013 and 2018. Miani defeated Stevie M Marak of NPP by a margin of 2,277 votes.
