It was a day of major setback for the NPP in Meghalaya. James Sangma, Cabinet minister and brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma lost from the Dadenggre seat by as low as just 7 votes.
It was a neck and neck fight between James Sangma and Rupa M Marak of the TMC from the very first round of counting as James Sangma began to trail from the start. He did lead for a while but finally went down losing by as low as just 7 votes.
While, 15,612 votes were cast in favour of James Sangma, TMC’s Rupa M Marak polled 15,619 votes.
James was the sitting MLA from the Dadenggre constituency. He had won the Dadenggre seat twice in 2013 and 2018.
In 2018, he won by a margin of 2,785 votes, securing a total of 7,239 votes.
The tenure of James Sangma as Home Minister in the Conrad Sangma government was mired in controversy as many accused him of being involved in the bustling coal racket in the state. He was removed from the post of Home Minister following allegations against him regarding his alleged involvement in illegal transportation of coal and being hand-in-glove with the coal mafia.
Among the other candidates who were in fray against James Sangma were Chesterfield Sangma of the Congress and Braining R Marak of the BJP.
