Manik Sarkar alleges anomalies in conduct of elections; urges party workers to maintain peace at any cost
Four-times former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar alleged that he received a number of reports about anomalies in the conduct of elections from different parts of the state within hours of voting beginning in Tirpura for the 60 Assembly seats. Speaking to the media after casting his vote at the Sishu Vihar HS School in Agartala, Manik Sarkar this morning, Sarkar said, “In the morning at the Ramnagar area in Agartala some complications were being created and I received report about this where police and administration were being misused.”
Sarkar also alleged that CPIM polling agents were barred from performing their duties in a number of places. The political veteran who is the sitting MLA of Dhanpur alleged, “Under Sonamura sub-division at Bhabanipur, Nirbhoypur besides other areas polling agents of our candidate were not allowed to enter the polling centres and whoever had managed to enter they were attacked, assaulted brutally and sent outside.”
Sarkar who decided not to contest this time, informed that the CPIM has already moved the Election Commission in this regard. Sarkar said, “We have drawn the attention of the Chief Electoral officer. We got the assurance they are looking into the matter and that appropriate action will be taken. In Udaipur, I got reports that desperate attempts were made to stop the voters from casting their votes, from Belonia too I received similar inputs.”
While batting for a peaceful election, Manik Sarkar said that he has appealed to his party workers to maintain peace at any cost. He said, “I have appealed our party workers to help the voters, if they seek any kind of assitance and if the voting rights are being violated, then they (CPIM) workers must build stiff resistance. But I asked them (party workers) not to take law into their own hands. And, if the Election Commission does not abide by its responsibility, then they must protest against it peacefully so that voters can exercise their franchise independently without fear. This is what I appealed our party workers to ensure.”
Manikr Sarkar has won the Dhanpur seat five times in a row since 1998. He is the sitting MLA of Dhanpur.
