Women Welfare Association’s initiative to make Tawang single-use plastic-free

Women Welfare Association aims to keep Tawang as beautiful as it has always been, and create awareness about single-use plastic

The Women Welfare Association of Tawang has begun a drive to make Tawang a single-use plastic-free district of Arunachal Pradesh and restore the beauty and clean and green environment.
“The aim is to keep Tawang as beautiful as it has always been, and create awareness about single-use plastic and its long-term impact on the environment. WWA has taken the initiative to maintain the ecological balance through plastic waste management in the border state of Arunachal Pradesh, believing in the three R as in Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” the Association said.
To eliminate plastic waste, the association has been collecting and sorting plastic waste for the past eight months, which it then sends to the Jamtse Gatseling recycling plant in Lumla for further processing.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Convenor of WWA Tashi Wangmu, said “WWA was established some 35 years ago and has contributed towards the society. However, under the present chairperson Tsering Lhamu, the wife of the late Jambey Tashi, former MLA of Lumla Constituency, the WWA has adopted three villages — Mandrelling, Shyo, and Changbu, from which plastic waste is collected, segregated, and sent to the recycling plant at Jamtse Gatsel in Lumla”.

She further said that WWA has been conducting mass awareness campaigns on single use plastic, and both the Indian Army and civil administration are equally assisting in this venture to make Tawang district free from plastic. The Women’s Welfare Association is planning to adopt more villages in the coming days.

WWA recently took part in an exhibition titled “Empowered Lives in Bordering Areas” in honour of Vijay Diwas on December 15 in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted and praised WWA members.
