2 separate incidents of teachers physically assaulting students have come to light in Assam. The first incident was reported from the Bhaskarjyoti government lower primary school at Gohpur in Biswanath district. A Class 5 girl student had to suffer fractured bones after one of her subject teachers severly beat her only for failing to write a word in English.

The second incident has been reported from the Talengram Lower Primary School at Lakhipur in Cachar district. In a similar incident, a Class 2 student had to face the wrath of the teacher for making mistakes while writing in English. Allegations are that, Headmaster Dibyajyoti Dutta assaulted the 7-year old student leading to severe injuries. As per reports, an FIR has been filed against the accused.

Meanwhile, both the incidents have evoked stern reactions among the guardians who are now demanding for appropriate justice and action against the accused teachers.

Both the incidents comes close on the heels of the spine chilling incident, where a teacher in Karnataka’s Gadag district flung a Class IV student from the first floor of the school building yesterday. The boy succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital. However, the reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained as the accused teacher still remains to be absconding.

It needs to be mentioned that these kind of incidents only raises questions, as to what should be the way forward to make the learning process more effective by avoiding such unfortunate incidents.

Noteworthy, in 2010, the Supreme Court banned corporal punishment through the Right To Education Act. As per the Right to Education Act, 2009, corporal punishment could be classified as physical punishment, mental harassment, and discrimination.
