Manipur: Disqualify 5 JD(U) MLAs, says Congress

The 5-JD(U) MLAs who merged with BJP are- Joykisan Singh, Ngursanglur Sanate, Md. Achab Uddin. Thangjam Arun Kumar and LM Khaute.

The Manipur Congress has filed a disqualification petition in the state assembly Speaker’s Tribunal against 5-Janata Dal (United) or JD (U) MLAs who had jumped ship to the BJP a month ago.

Manipur Congress vice-president Hareshwar Goswami filed the disqualification petitions against the 5 MLAs.

It may be mentioned, that Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh had accepted the merger of the 5-JD (U) MLAs with the BJP, under the provisions of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

The 5-JD(U) MLAs who switched allegiance last month include- Joykisan Singh, Ngursanglur Sanate, Md. Achab Uddin, Thangjam Arun Kumar and LM Khaute.

The JD(U) had won six seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly earlier this year and extended their support to the BJP government headed by Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh.

The 6th JD(U) MLA who did not join the BJP is Mohammed Nasir, who was elected from the Lilong constituency.
