Sikkim rural polls: SDF demands safety, security

The Himalayan state is going to Panchayat elections in November. SDF flayed the govt's role and accused it of high-handedness.
The Sikkim Democratic Front has mounted it’s attack on the Prem Singh Tamang government. Speaking to Northeast Live, SDF Chief Spokesperson MK Subba alleged that the law and order situation in the Himalayan state has deteriorated after the incumbent government took over in 2019. Subba said this after an SDF delegation submitted a memorandum to Chief Secretary VB Pathak.
Meanwhile, this move by the SDF comes a day after the date for the Panchayat elections have been announced. In the memorandum, the SDF urged upon the Chief Secretary to ensure proper safety and security of aspiring candidates.
Besides, the SDF also appealed the Chief Secretary to extend the duration of filing of nominations rather than the 6 days of stipulated time.
Not only this, the SDF without naming anyone, further alleged that FIRs are not being registered in the police stations and victims being put behind the bars, while the accused are having a free run. The SDF alleged that the government has resorted to high-handedness and making blatant use of law enforcing agencies.
Apart from this, the SDF delegation also apprised the Chief Secretary and sought to know about the status of probe into the MCX scam.
If that was not all, the SDF also alleged that the government is yet to grant compensation to those who have lost their lives in the COVID-19 pandemic.
