What started as a step towards sticking to the fundamentals of healthy life in Meghalaya has now turned into a movement backed by legislation and involving all stakeholders to holistically work for a better, healthier and cleaner Meghalaya.

Earning international accolades for cleanliness, Meghalaya which is house to the Asia’s cleanest village Mawlynnong is putting in all efforts to turn the capital city clean and green.

It was on August last, the East Khasi Hills district police had adopted a stringent approach to deal with the problem of pollution and littering in public places and tourist spots.

The citizens were advised to desist from causing obstruction, injury or annoyance to passerby, or cause pollution and littering in any public roads and Tourists spots in East Khasi Hills district.

Under which if anyone was found guilty was arrested under section 102 of Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 and on conviction by a court of law was fined Rs 5000.

Almost after a year now, the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Davis Marak informed that the step taken by the police worked and littering has been contained to a large extent.

Talking about the number of cases taken up in this regard, Marak informed that till December 2017, 20 cases were registered out of which 10 are still pending in the court and from January 2018 till March, three cases have been registered.
