Process to start scientific mining underway in Meghalaya

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, on Thursday informed the public that the process to start scientific mining in the state has begun with a long list of individual miners applying for prospecting licenses. 

Speaking to media, Chief Minister Sangma said the state has received applications for prospecting licences from 15 or 18 individual miners.

According to him, some of them have also gone ahead and submitted their mining plans, which will then get approval from different agencies, after which the scientific mining process can start. 

He further informed that the process is based on the Supreme Court ruling that came out in July 2019. He added the process is a complicated process, so the government will wait and watch. However, the process is on. 

It may be mentioned here that the High Court recently asked the state government to initiate a comprehensive process to give permission for legal mining.
