In a massive boost to the peace push in Assam, 8 Advasi insurgent groups from the state are all set to sign a peace accord termed the Adivasi accord in New Delhi on Thursday in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The big development was informed by none other than the Assam Chief Minister who took to Twitter wherein he wrote that he held a meeting with the rebel Adivasi groups.

These 8 Adivasi groups had entered into a ceasefire agreement with the government of India back in 2012 and were awaiting an agreement.

The process to sign the Adivasi accord gained momentum in the last 6 months when the Assam govt officials assisted by Adviser Northeast AK Mishra had several rounds of discussion with Adivasi militant groups leading to the accord.

Among the Advasi outfits set to sign the accord are the Adivasi Cobra Military of Assam, Birsa Commando Force, Adivasi People’s army, All Assam Adivasi National Army, Santhal tiger force, and three breakaway groups.

Around 1200 cadres will join the mainstream as part of the agreement. As per sources, the Adivasis in Assam may get a welfare committee apart from a socio-economic package.
