The Joint Students’ Coordination Committee (JSCC) comprising of four student bodies of Manipur namely AMSU, MSF, KSA and SUK has criticised Amar Chitra Katha’s comic book titled “Tribal Leaders of the Freedom Struggle” for allegedly misrepresenting Manipur’s history. The special edition comic book has been published in connection with the 75th year of India’s independence.

JSCC Convenor S. Bidyananda pointed out that the comic book featured Manipuri freedom fighter Paona Brajabasi as a tribal leader of the freedom struggle in India.

Noteworthy here is that Paona Brajabasi fought against the British in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Bidyananda categorically stated that the Anglo-Manipur War has nothing to do with India’s freedom struggle.

Expressing strong condemnations over the alleged misrepresentation of Manipur’s history, the JSCC demanded the publisher and the writer to apologise to the people of Manipur.

As announced by Bidyananda, JSCC has also banned selling of the said comic book in Manipur. The students also burnt copies of the comic book yesterday to protest the alleged misrepresentation.
