At least 12,568 pigs have been culled during the first ASF outbreak last year while 33,417 died during the same period.
As compensation for the thousands of pigs culled due to the African swine fever outbreak, Mizoram animal husbandry and veterinary minister, Dr K Beichhua distributed over Rs 10 crore as compensation to over 2 thousand families who had to cull their pigs to stop the outbreak.
The Minister said pork being the staple food of the people, concerted efforts were made to attain self-sufficiency in pork requirements by encouraging pig farmers to go for mass production and putting a ban on the import of piglets back in 2019.
Minister Beichhua said the state was expected to be self-sufficient in 2 or 3 years but the ASF outbreak has dashed their goals. He also added the outbreak came despite several preventive measures.
At least 12,568 pigs have been culled during the first ASF outbreak last year while 33,417 died during the same period. The total loss incurred by the pig farming families was estimated to be over Rs 60 crore.
Moreover, during the second outbreak this year, around 9000 pigs died, while 7,653 pigs have been culled. The outbreak had infested 127 villages in as many as 10 districts in the state.
