Four buildings occupied by 8 families were completely gutted when a major fire broke out at the border town of Champhai in Mizoram.
The fire broke out in the Kahrawt locality at around 6:45 pm yesterday.
While nobody has been reported to be injured, at least 16 pigs were burnt alive in the fire.
Though the cause and origin of the fire is yet to be determined, Police suspects that the fire was being used for cooking pig feed under the building of K. Lalbiakkunga, a Presbyterian church elder.
The RCC building belonging to Lalbiakkunga was where the fire broke out and it spread to the nearby three houses, which also belonged to the same person, occupied by 4 families.
Fire tenders soon reached the spot and doused the fire after battling the flames for a few hours.
The total loss in the fire was estimated to be around Rs 114 lakhs.
In another fire incident, a 35-year-old woman was burned to death when the Assam-type building the family rented was completely gutted at Bawngkawn locality in Aizawl city on Sunday.
The landlord, living on the upper floor was not in the house when the building caught fire and the only daughter of the tenants was visiting relatives.
The local leaders said that the woman and her husband managed to run outside the house when they detected the fire, but the woman re-entered the building for some unknown reason and was charred to death.
With no rains for days altogether and the hot dry summer setting in, the state is again bracing for more fires in the habitation areas as well as in the dry forest areas.
