Tokyo Olympian Lalremsiami to lead FIH World Cup starting Dec 5, 2021

Mizoram’s Lalremsiami (21), Tokyo Olympic star who was a part of the Indian senior women’s hockey team which finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, will lead India’s 18-member junior squad at the FIH World Cup scheduled to start in South Africa from December 5, 2021.

Sports Minister of Mizoram, Robert Romawia Royte congratulates Lalremsiami and the team and extended his best wishes.

 “I just got the news that @Lalremsiami30 will captain the national team for the upcoming Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup. Along with her, another Mizoram’s player Marina Lalramnghaki also got called up in the national team. I congratulate them and wish them the very best,” the Minister tweeted.

16 top teams from across the world will compete for the title, which was previously won by Argentina in 2016.

While the 21-year-old hockey player will lead the team, defender Ishika Chaudhary will serve as her vice-captain.

Salima Tete and Sharmila Devi, who were members of the senior squad at the Tokyo Olympics, are also on the team.

Prabhleen Kaur and Preeti have been selected as alternate players who will be allowed to compete if someone in the squad is injured or unable to perform due to COVID-19.

Chief Coach Women Janneke Schopman in a statement released by Hockey India (HI) said, “It was quite tough to choose the final 18 players, especially because all 28 players in the Core Probable Group worked exceptionally hard in recent months and made significant development.”

Schopman further said, “But we feel that we have selected a strong team that can compete with every team at the Junior World Cup.”

India gave its best performance in this prestigious event came in 2013 in which the country won the bronze medal defeating England.

India, who is in Pool C, will begin its campaign with playing against Russia on December 6.

In its second round-robin league, it will face defending champion Argentina on December 7, followed by a match against Japan on December 9.

Between December 10 and December 16, the knockout matches will be held.

The knockout matches are scheduled to take place between December 10 to 16, 2021.

The Netherlands, Korea, Ireland, and Zimbabwe are in Pool A, while England, Belgium, Canada, and Uruguay are in Pool B.

Pool C includes Argentina, India, Japan, and Russia, while Pool D includes Germany, Spain, the United States, and South Africa.
