The All Tribal Students Union Manipur has withdrawn the total shutdown in all the hill districts of Manipur after the state police released the three student leaders on Tuesday night.
The development comes after a mutual understanding was reached at a meeting between the state government and ATSUM in Imphal yesterday evening.
Earlier, ATSUM together with the Kuki Students’ Organisation and the All Naga Students’s Association Manipur, had imposed emergency shutdown in all the Hill Districts of the state after three ATSUM leaders were arrested by Imphal West Police on Tuesday.
Simthar Jajo, Khaiminlen Doungel and Kakai Singsit were arrested from their respective homes by the police following agitations launched over the delay of ADC Election in Manipur.
On Monday, disappointed with the alleged state government’s suppressive and unresponsive attitude towards its demands for timely installation of the Autonomous District Council Election, ATSUM had imposed total closures on all government offices in all the Hill districts.
It needs to be mentioned here that ATSUM has been relentlessly demanding for timely installation of the Autonomous District Council which is the grassroot democratic institution in the Hill Districts. The ADC elections have been delayed by 6 to 7 months now.
