India has surpassed Brazil to become the second worst coronavirus-hit nation on Monday, with a record spike of 90,802 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally past 42 lakh mark.

With 4,204,614 infections, India is nearly 70,000 cases ahead of Brazil and also has the fastest-growing caseload. However, the United States, with over 62.75 lakh COVID-19 cases, remains the worst-affected country.

“A total of 1,016 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The total case tally stands at 42,04,614 including 8,82,542 active cases, 32,50,429 cured/discharged/migrated and 71,642 deaths,” the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

The worst affected state continues to be Maharashtra which on Sunday reported 23,350 new COVID-19 cases. The state’s tally of infected people has surpassed the 9 lakh-mark. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are also among the worst-hit states.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, a cumulative total of 4,95,51,507 samples have been tested so far, of which 7,20,362 samples were tested on Sunday.
