In a big breakthrough, the Assam Police recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Assam’s Udalguri district just a day ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of Guwahati city police and Udalguri police carried out special operations in different parts of the district under the Bodo Territorial Council late Thursday night.

High explosive bombs, RPGs, two AK-47, five AK-56 assault rifles, two M-16 rifles, 9MM pistols, detonators and 20 kg of explosives as well as several hundred rounds of live ammunition were recovered during the operation.

Briefing newspersons, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Munna Prasad Gupta said that the arms consignment may belong to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland or the NDFB, which is now disbanded. Investigations are on to ascertain this.

This fresh seizure comes barely three days after security forces recovered AK rifles and live ammunition from Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district.
