Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to allow His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje to visit Sikkim for a physical darshan with devotees in the Himalayan State.

His Holiness, the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the Supreme Head of the Karmapa Kagyu Sect, one of the four sects of Nalanda tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism was granted asylum in India in 2000 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Later on restrictions on his movements within the country were imposed by the then Central Government that impeded his visit to Sikkim despite request from devotees in the state.

Meanwhile, Sonam Lama, Minster for Ecclesiastical department, Government and also MLA for Sangha Seat has written a invitation letter to the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje to visit Sikkim and bless  the followers in the state.
