In an unprecedented move, the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights has moved an intervention application in the Supreme Court on the Citizenship Amendment Act issue.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, informed India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva on Monday that her Office had filed the intervention application.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar, reacting to the move by the UNHRC, said that the Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter of India and concerns the sovereign right of the Indian Parliament to make laws.
Kumar also added that India strongly believe that no foreign party has any locus standi on issues pertaining to India’s sovereignty.
The MEA spokesperson further added that India is a democratic country governed by the rule of law, and have utmost respect for and full trust in the country’s independent judiciary, and is confident that the Government’s sound and legally sustainable position would be vindicated by the Supreme Court.
