KIYG Day 8: Field day for athletes from Northeast; hosts Assam 10th in standings

Northeast Athletes shone on the 8th day of the 3rd edition of the action-packed Khelo India Youth Games.

The mega sporting spectacle witnessed Hosts Assam, followed by Frontier State Arunachal Pradesh and sporting powerhouse Manipur notching up medals in the respective weightlifting events.

Assam Eve Gitashree Sonowal did the Hosts proud as she won Silver in the (Under-21) 49 Kg category of the Weightlifting event. While Konjenbam Nomita Devi bagged the Bronze medal.

Earlier on Friday, Assam’s Prabal Pratim Gogoi clinched Silver in the (Under-17) 55 kg weightlifting event.

Golong Tinkoo shone for frontier state Arunachal Pradesh as he bagged Gold in the (Under-17) Weightlifting event. Arunachal’s Shankar Lapoong also clinched Bronze medal in the same event.

Assam Eve Shivangi Sharma clinched gold in the 200 meter free style swimming event and did the hosts proud at the ongoing Khelo India youth games. Shivangi’s gold is the eighth for the host State.

Amid the feats of glory achieved by the Northeast Athletes, Assam Eve Anubhuti Baruah has entered the (Under-21) 50 meter Swimming event.

Shivangi Sharma, followed by Rajashri Buragohain and Subhrangshu Dutta have also entered the final rounds of several swimming event categories.

Among the Northeastern states, Hosts Assam is currently placed 10th in the standings and has 32 medals in its kitty, including 9 Gold medals. ‘Sports Mad’ Manipur is thus far 11th in the standings and has added 29 medals including 9 Gold to their kitty with their forte being in Judo event.

Earlier on Thursday, Chitra Probha Chetia clinched the 11th Bronze medal in the 40 kg (Under-17) Weightlifting event on Thursday.

On the 6th day of the sporting event, Assam lawn bowl players won three golds and a bronze medal in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games.

While Surajit Burhagohain won the Gold in the boys’ singles event, Adinita Kakati, Suman Kumari Pandey and Suranjana Baruah pipped the other participants to win the top honours in lawn bowls Girls’ Triples event.

Meanwhile, lawn bowl players Jinu and Karina won a bronze for Assam in the (Under-21) Girls’ doubles event.
