The National People’s Party (NPP) will not be fielding any candidate in the upcoming Shella by-polls and has decided to support the candidate from ally United Democratic Party (UDP).
The decision was taken after senior leaders including the chiefs of the UDP and the NPP met and held discussions on Tuesday.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi informed that they have decided that the NPP would stick to their commitment to support the candidature of Balajied Synrem the son of Late Dr Donkupar Roy and will not field any candidate of theirs.
As to how would the NPP deal with the party’s East Khasi Hills district unit who wanted the NPP leaders to field a candidate, Kharlukhi said that they also have to look into the possibility of winning and they have made an assessment and decided to support the son of late Dr Donkupar Roy.
It may be mentioned that until yesterday things were not looking too good for the UDP with its coalition partners as one after the other showed signs of contesting the Shella by-poll despite appeals from the UDP top leadership to unanimously support their candidate.
First it was the NPP’s East Khasi Hills district unit who had approached the NPP top leaders to look into the possibility of fielding their own candidate. BJP followed soon with state president Shibun Lyngdoh making it clear that they are willing to contest the by-polls and are awaiting a go ahead from the central leadership.
The People’s Democratic Party, although yet to decide whether to field a candidate, showed signs that they want to contest as its leader and State Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling had said that the PDF finished second in the last elections and should take a chance this time as well.
