Intra-Ethnic Clashes in Myanmar Force Thousands to Flee into Mizoram, YMA Spends Over Rs 6 Lakh in Aid

The number of Myanmar refugees in Champhai district alone is estimated at around 30,000.
Recent intra-ethnic violence between the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and the Chin Defence Force- H (CDF-H) in Myanmar has triggered a humanitarian crisis along the Indo-Myanmar border, forcing thousands of civilians to seek refuge in Mizoram.
Since the outbreak of fresh violence in early July this year, over 4,000 displaced individuals have taken shelter in Zokhawthar, and a few in Vaphai village, a border town in Champhai district. The majority of the refugees have been accommodated in community facilities including buildings belonging to the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), the Salvation Army and local schools. The number of Myanmar refugees in Champhai district alone is estimated at around 30,000.
The Central YMA, which has been at the forefront of refugee assistance since the Myanmar military coup in 2021, has stepped up once again to provide emergency relief. In response to the recent influx, the Central YMA has contributed food aid worth Rs 3,00,000 to the Zokhawthar YMA branch and an additional Rs 2,00,000 worth of food to the neighbouring village of Vaphai. Furthermore, a cash donation of Rs 1,00,000 has been extended to the Sub-Headquarters YMA in Champhai to support ongoing relief efforts.
The Mizoram state government is playing a coordinating role through the Village Level Committee on Myanmar Refugees (VLCMR), which includes representatives from both the YMA and local village councils. This committee operates under the supervision of the Champhai Deputy Commissioner and is instrumental in ensuring efficient distribution of aid and maintaining order.
Currently, the refugees have been restricted from moving beyond Zokhawthar, including re-entering Myanmar, due to ongoing security concerns.
