Durand Cup Roadshow: This marks only the second time Manipur is hosting a leg of Asia’s oldest football tournament.

Olympic medalist and Padma Shri awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, alongside Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding of Spear Corps, flagged off the roadshow for the 134th edition of the Durand Cup from Sendra in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Thursday. The ceremony saw participation from several civil and military dignitaries.

This marks only the second time Manipur is hosting a leg of Asia’s oldest football tournament. It is one of six venues selected for the 2025 edition, with neighbouring Meghalaya also representing the Northeast.

The roadshow will conclude in Imphal later in the evening, where Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla will officially receive the trophy. The event attracted a large turnout of football fans and players, who gathered in large numbers to welcome the trophy with enthusiasm and pride.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Chanu expressed her joy and hope for the youth. “There is much to learn. The next generation should work hard. I’m very happy that Manipur is hosting this, even in challenging times,” she said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma unveiled the Durand Cup trophy at the State Convention Centre in Shillong, kicking off the trophy tour in the state. Shillong is set to host eight matches, including key knockout games, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Durand Cup remains a symbol of India’s rich footballing tradition and continues to foster sporting excellence across the nation.
