Manipuri Community in Assam: Demonstrators emphasised that the creation of the council is a constitutional right of the Manipuri community.

Members of the Manipuri Autonomous Council Demand Coordination Committee staged a mass protest in Silchar on Thursday, renewing their call for the formation of a Manipuri Autonomous Council in Assam. The demand, despite repeated assurances from Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has remained unfulfilled for the past five years.

Speaking to the media, demonstrators emphasised that the creation of the council is a constitutional right of the Manipuri community. They noted that over five lakh Manipuris have been residing in Assam’s Barak and Brahmaputra Valleys since the 16th century.

“Several autonomous councils have already been constituted for different communities in Assam. We are not asking for special treatment, only for what is rightfully ours under the law,” said a protester.

The protest, held near the Shaheed Khudiram Bose statue, saw hundreds of Manipuri men and women gather with placards, raising slogans in support of their long-pending demand. Protesters urged the Assam government to take immediate steps to establish the council, which they say is vital to preserving their cultural identity.

The community expressed deep frustration over years of delay and warned that failure to act would lead to intensified democratic agitation in the days ahead. They reiterated their commitment to continuing the movement until their legitimate demands are met.
