Meghalaya: The incident came to light on July 1 after a medical check-up at a primary health centre revealed that she was six months pregnant.
In a deeply disturbing incident, a 15-year-old girl from Mawlai in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district was sexually assaulted by her 38-year-old stepfather.
The incident came to light on July 1 after a medical check-up at a primary health centre revealed that the girl was six months pregnant. She was immediately admitted to the Ganesh Das Maternity and Child Hospital.
The survivor’s mother disclosed the ordeal on Monday, revealing that her daughter had been living in fear and was threatened into silence by the accused.
Despite repeated efforts to understand her daughter’s condition, the girl insisted she was fine. It was only after neighbours expressed concern that the mother took her for a medical examination, leading to the shocking discovery.
The girl, now discharged from the hospital, is reportedly in stable condition.
Following the medical findings, the mother lodged a formal complaint with the police. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, confirmed that the accused had gone into hiding but was eventually apprehended by the Special Cell from Syad, Umsning in Ri-Bhoi district after several days on the run.
SP Syiem commended the Special Cell’s persistent efforts and stated that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have assured that the matter will be pursued to its full legal extent.
This case has sent shockwaves through the community and reignited calls for stronger protective measures for minors and swifter justice for survivors of sexual abuse.
