National Award-winning filmmaker and former film critic Utpal Borpujari has been nominated as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Indian Institute of Creative Skills (IICS), a pioneering initiative in the country’s creative education landscape. IICS is India’s first industry-led creative incubator and operates under the chairmanship of Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookuty.
The institute is managed by the Media & Entertainment Skills Council (MESC), chaired by Grammy Award-winning composer Shankar Mahadevan. IICS has been established under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and is affiliated with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) Academy.
An alumnus of IIT Roorkee and a respected voice in Indian cinema, Borpujari joins a distinguished panel on the IICS Board of Advisors.
The board includes celebrated film directors like Girish Kasaravalli, Rahul Rawail, and Shonali Bose; producers like Shibashish Sarkar; National Award-winning editors A. Sreekar Prasad and Bina Paul; action director Sham Kaushal; actors Amit Behl and Dia Mirza; costume designer Neeta Lulla; lyricist and screenwriter Kausar Munir; theatre icon Firoz Abbas Khan; cinematographer Ravi K Chandran; and animation filmmaker Kireet Khurana, among others.
Borpujari, who is also a member of the apex decision-making body of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC Society), expressed gratitude for being part of IICS. “I am privileged and honoured to be part of this forward-looking initiative aimed at empowering the young generations of our country in various fields associated with the entertainment industry, which is projected to have exponential growth in India in the coming years,” he said.
IICS aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to “Create in India” by nurturing domestic talent and transforming India into a global skill capital. Its first campus is slated to open in Delhi soon, with nine more campuses planned across the country.
The institute will offer skill-based degree and certificate courses in disciplines like sound design, music video production, costume design, animation and game development, make-up and prosthetics, digital PR and journalism, event management, media management, and visual communication. The curriculum will blend classroom instruction with hands-on learning through real-world projects and mentorship by industry leaders.
Admissions for several courses are already underway, with more information available on the IICS website and social media platforms. “I hope youngsters from Northeast India would avail of this skill-driven initiative that is aimed at preparing the youth for entry into the industry at an empowered level,” Borpujari added.
