Former Tripura CM Biplab Deb Rushes to Pradyot’s Palace After Tipra Motha Threatens to Withdraw from Alliance

First Published: 6th July, 2025 9:49 IST

A palace source confirmed that the two leaders held a one-on-one, closed-door meeting for over an hour.

In a dramatic political turn, former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb paid a surprise late-evening visit to Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma at the Ujjayanta Palace on Saturday, just hours after a senior Tipra Motha MLA threatened to withdraw support from the BJP-led state government.

Both leaders claimed the visit was merely a “courtesy call” to wish Pradyot a belated happy birthday, his birthday was on Friday, but the timing has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation of urgent backchannel talks to salvage the alliance.

Earlier on Saturday, senior Tipra Motha legislator Ranjit Debbarma openly warned that the party may withdraw from the alliance if the state and central governments failed to fulfill the promises made in the Tiprasa Accord signed in March 2024. He also slammed the government for its inaction on curbing illegal infiltration from across the Bangladesh border.

Biplab Deb’s unexpected visit to the royal palace, a symbol of Tripura’s tribal politics, has added weight to talks of a deepening rift between Tipra Motha and the BJP. A palace source confirmed that the two leaders held a one-on-one, closed-door meeting for over an hour.

While Biplab Deb no longer heads the state government, he continues to hold sway in party affairs and often plays a key role in bridging the gap between Tripura’s regional players and the BJP’s central leadership. His outreach to Pradyot is widely seen as a possible attempt to prevent the alliance from collapsing.

Pradyot has been increasingly vocal about the BJP’s delay in implementing the Accord and recently skipped several BJP-led events, adding to the perception of growing friction.

As political uncertainty looms large, all eyes are now on how the BJP high command responds. The big question remains: Was this just a birthday visit, or a last-minute effort to stop Tipra Motha from withdrawing from the alliance?
