Dark Villages Still Exist? Meghalaya Targets Full Electrification by 2028, Says Power Minister AT Mondal

He admitted that several villages are either completely unelectrified or have lost power due to poor infrastructure and maintenance issues.

Many villages in Meghalaya still remain in darkness, with some never having received electricity at all. As the 2028 Legislative Assembly elections approach, questions are rising over whether the state can truly achieve full electrification in the next three years.

Speaking at the National Power Committee (NPC) meeting held in Shillong on Friday, Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal said the state government remains fully committed to achieving 100% rural electrification by 2028. He admitted that several villages are either completely unelectrified or have lost power due to poor infrastructure and maintenance issues.

However, Mondal expressed strong hope that the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a central government initiative , will help bridge the power gap in rural areas. He added that the scheme is already underway and aims to strengthen power distribution networks, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

The minister also said that coordination between the state and central governments is crucial to make this goal a reality. He assured that the Power Department is taking all necessary steps, including upgrading old lines, replacing damaged transformers, and improving village-level power connectivity.

While the road to full electrification is long and difficult, Mondal said the state has made steady progress and will continue to work hard to bring light to every home in Meghalaya.
