They urged the government to act immediately and ensure that displaced families can return home with dignity and safety.
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from several relief camps in Manipur’s valley districts launched a large-scale sit-in protest on Thursday, demanding urgent steps for their safe and dignified return to their native villages.
The protest, organised by the Churachandpur Meitei United Committee, comes amid repeated government claims that peace and normalcy are gradually returning to the violence-hit state. However, the protesters expressed deep frustration over the government’s inaction and said they continue to suffer despite the claims.
“We have submitted several memorandums to the government, explaining our hardships and seeking urgent intervention, but we have received no concrete response,” said Subhachandra, an executive member of the Committee. He criticised the authorities for failing to provide a clear roadmap for rehabilitation and resettlement, even after more than two years since the crisis began.
The protesting IDPs presented a six-point charter of demands. These include immediate resettlement in their original villages, compensation for damaged and destroyed properties, long-term livelihood support, security guarantees in their native areas, and the formation of a dedicated body to oversee rehabilitation and resettlement.
Elderly people, women, and children joined the protest and carried placards that read, “We Want Justice”, “Resettle Us Now”, and “Enough of Temporary Shelters.” The demonstrators said they are tired of living in relief camps with no certainty about their future.
They urged the government to act immediately and ensure that displaced families can return home with dignity and safety.
