Train services passing through Dima Hasao district in Assam were disrupted once again on Wednesday after a fresh landslide struck near Mupa station, just few days after operations had resumed following a 10-day suspension.
Several trains, including the Silchar-Guwahati Express, Agartala-LTT Express, and the Kanchanjunga Express, were stranded at various stations due to the incident.
According to railway officials, the landslide occurred at around 2:45 PM between Ditokcherra (DKE) and Mupa (MPP) stations in the Lumding–Badarpur (LMG-BPB) hill section. Around 30 large boulders and nearly 100 cubic meters of soil fell onto the track. Small rocks are reportedly still rolling down, making clearance operations challenging.
A stationary watchman at the site stopped the 15616 Silchar–Guwahati Express in time. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes and backed the train safely to Mupa at 3:18 PM.
Rescue and clearance efforts are underway. One JCB machine is already working at the site, while two excavators are being transported to the location on a BFR (bogie flat wagon) from Mupa.
As of 4:15 PM, the following trains were halted:
Down Direction (Towards Guwahati):
15616 Silchar–Guwahati Express – Returned to Mupa at 3:18 PM and held.
13174 Kanchenjunga Express (Sabroom–Sealdah) – Arrived at Maibong at 4:05 PM and detained.
12520 Agartala–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express – Arrived at New Haflong at 4:00 PM and held.
15618 Dullavcherra–Guwahati Express – Left Ditokcherra at 3:47 PM, likely to be detained at New Harangajao.
14619 Agartala–Firozpur Express – Arrived at Jatinga Lampur at 3:45 PM for crossing; likely to be detained en route.
Railway officials said train operations will resume only after the landslide debris is cleared from the track. Efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy at the earliest.
