Meghalaya Dy CM Prestone Tynsong Urges HNLC Cadres to Shun Path of Violence and Join Mainstream

Tynsong said he is confident that HNLC members will eventually come to realise that their current path leads nowhere and has no future.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has appealed to the remaining cadres of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to shut the path of violence and return to the mainstream.

Speaking to the media, Tynsong said he is confident that HNLC members will eventually come to realise that their current path leads nowhere and has no future.

Referring to two former HNLC cadres who recently surrendered, he said their decision to return was driven by the desire to secure a meaningful future.

“I’m sure the other members will also realise one day that their career is going nowhere. Just like the two boys who recently surrendered, why did they do that? Because they understood that they need a future, a career. They are still young, probably under 30, and they saw that returning to the mainstream was the only way forward,” Tynsong stated.

He urged remaining HNLC members to follow the example of those who have surrendered and joined the mainstream.

“I appeal to all HNLC members to follow in their footsteps and join mainstream” he added.

When asked are the HNLC leaders making Bangladesh their base? Tynsong said, “I can’t say anything for sure. But yes, our police force is very much alert on this.”

He reiterated that the Meghalaya government remains open to dialogue with the HNLC, emphasising that it depends on the outfit if it is open for dialogue.

“I have said this many times that the government’s door is still open for talks. If the HNLC wants to initiate dialogue, we are ready. The door is open from our side. Whether it’s a door or a window, it’s up to them to open it. If they want to contact us, we are ready. Our phone is always on.”
